The production of historical Damascus steel (known as wootz) declined significantly after the 18th century and was completely lost at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is not known whether this was due to the exhaustion of ore deposits or the demise of the master smiths. It was a closely guarded secret mastered by only a few craftsmen. In fact, the price of this steel was higher than the price of silver. The reputation and history of Damascus steel led to the creation of many legends, such as the ability to cut through a rifle barrel or slice hairs falling onto the blade; however, the credibility of these legends is questionable.

Modern Damascus steel is created using the method of forge-welding two or more types of steel. A suitable combination is hard steel with a high carbon content and flexible steel with a lower carbon content. These two steels are then folded, forge-welded, and hammered into a longer strip. The number of layers in the resulting Damascus steel depends on how many times the steel was folded. This demanding process must be repeated several times. With a higher number of layers, the properties of the steel improve. After the blade is made, its surface is then etched to highlight the Damascus pattern.

The final quality of Damascus steel is primarily determined by the quality of the steels used in its production. If a manufacturer combines two high-quality steels and follows the correct technological procedure, the result is a premium Damascus steel that is both hard and tough.
