The "Mod" (Modified) addition signifies that the manufacturer slightly adjusted the chemical composition (often by increasing carbon, chromium, or molybdenum content) to improve cutting performance without sacrificing the main advantage, which is toughness. It is popular for larger fixed-blade knives that are meant to withstand heavy use.
