Natural sharpening stones bring with them one major advantage: their extreme hardness and durability. These stones are quarried and subsequently cut to the desired size. With natural stones, it is not possible to precisely determine their grit rating; it always falls within a certain range.

The most famous natural sharpening stones originate from Arkansas (USA) or the Belgian Ardennes. Natural Japanese stones, which were very famous in the past, are now extremely difficult to obtain, as most Japanese quarries are closed. The Slovak sharpening stone, Rozsutec, while relatively little-known globally, is considered one of the best natural sharpening stones available.
