Carbon steel is a basic type of steel containing iron and carbon. Some types of carbon steel may contain smaller amounts of alloying elements such as manganese or nickel. The carbon content usually ranges from 0.3% to 1.25%, although exceptions may exist. The higher the carbon content in the steel, the higher its hardness and the lower its toughness.

The main advantages of carbon steel are its toughness, good edge retention, and very easy sharpening. For this reason, carbon steel is very popular for outdoor, bushcraft, and survival knives. Carbon steels with a lower carbon content (usually around 0.4%–0.7%) are characterized by very high toughness and are therefore primarily used for making machetes or axes.
The disadvantage of carbon steel is its low corrosion resistance. Manufacturers often use a surface coating on the blade to increase its resistance to corrosion. Carbon steel knives require regular care. After each use, it is advisable to wash the blade, wipe it dry, and treat it with oil.
