Tool steel is characterized by a carbon content of 0.5%–1.5% (sometimes more) and a relatively high content of alloying elements (chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, and others). The basic properties of tool steels are high hardness, toughness, and very high wear resistance. These characteristics make tool steels an ideal choice for outdoor knives.

Tool steels are substantially more expensive than ordinary stainless or carbon steels. Their high price is primarily due to the very high content of alloying elements, but also the demanding metallurgical manufacturing processes.
Since it has a low chromium content, tool steel knives are susceptible to corrosion and demanding to maintain. Therefore, it is necessary to wash the knives immediately after use and regularly treat them with oil.
