Fixed blade knives

As the name suggests, fixed-blade knives have a blade that cannot be folded. Due to their construction, they are considered one of the most reliable and durable tools.

Generally, if you need a knife for demanding work where reliability and durability are paramount, you should choose a fixed blade. The vast majority of bushcraft, outdoor, and hunting knives have a fixed blade.

Types of Construction

Fixed-blade knives have two types of construction:

  • Full Tang – knives made from a single piece of steel that runs through the entire handle. This knife is stronger and better balanced, ideal for heavier work and tougher challenges.
  • Hidden Tang – the tang is inserted into the handle, meaning it does not run along the entire circumference. This type of knife has its center of gravity shifted towards the tip and is often lighter than a full-tang knife. The hidden tang construction is typical for Scandinavian knives.

Advantages of Fixed-Blade Knives

  • Strength and Durability – most fixed-blade knives have a full-tang construction, allowing them to handle demanding tasks like chopping or splitting wood.
  • Reliability – they have no moving parts or folding mechanisms that can fail or get clogged more easily in field conditions.
  • Easy Maintenance and Cleaning – due to the absence of moving parts and hidden spaces, the knife is much easier to clean.
  • Versatility – a fixed blade is suitable for a wide range of tasks—from delicate food preparation to heavy-duty work in the wilderness.

Accessories and Knife Care

Proper subsequent care is an important part of working with knives. Every knife should be sharp enough to fulfill its basic function. To keep your knife functional longer, you must dedicate yourself to its regular maintenance.

How to Sharpen Fixed-Blade Knives?

Everything essentially depends on the size of the knife and its geometry (the grind type). Generally, fixed-blade knives, especially hunting and bushcraft knives, are significantly larger than everyday knives. Therefore, when choosing a sharpening kit, you must ensure it can handle larger-sized blades. Since these knives are intended for tougher work in the wilderness, we recommend taking a pocket sharpener with you for emergency sharpening in unexpected situations directly in the field.

Does the Knife's Construction Affect Firesteel Use?

A firesteel is an essential part of outdoor gear. Some knives come with a firesteel, while for others, you can choose one based on your preferences. The choice does not depend on the knife's construction (full tang or hidden tang), but rather on the sharpness of the knife's spine , against which the firesteel is struck.
